The Candela PicoWay is a picosecond laser, meaning the pulse duration fires in increments of picoseconds or a trillionth of a second. But not all picosecond lasers are created equal. To better understand its power, it’s helpful to review the evolution of laser tattoo removal technology.

In the 1990s, Q-Switch nanosecond lasers emerged as a major advancement in the tattoo removal industry. A nanosecond laser fires in billionths of a second and is considered a photothermal laser. These lasers effectively heat and shatter ink particles, but they also increase interaction with surrounding skin tissue, leading to more downtime.

Fast-forward to 2012, and a new generation of picosecond lasers was introduced. These lasers can shatter ink into much smaller particles with no downtime. Why? Because when a laser fires at less than 500 picoseconds, it becomes a photoacoustic laser, using sound waves instead of heat to break down ink.

How the Astanza Trinity Laser Works

The key to successful laser tattoo removal lies in the absorption of specific wavelengths by tattoo ink particles. Lasers emit different wavelengths to target particular ink colors. An ink particle will either absorb or reflect a laser’s light energy, depending on the wavelength and the ink’s color.

When the correct wavelength is absorbed, the ink particle shatters into tiny fragments, which the body’s immune system can naturally flush out. Conversely, if the wrong wavelength is used, the ink particle reflects the light energy, remaining permanently etched in the skin.

Astanza Trinity Laser’s Three Versatile Wavelengths

Rethink’s Trinity laser supports three versatile wavelengths – 1064 nm, 532 nm, and 694 nm – to deliver full-spectrum removal on all multicolored tattoos. This industry-leading technology combines two standalone lasers – a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser and a Q-switched ruby laser. Here’s a breakdown of the color groups that our Trinity wavelengths target:

Trinity’s 694 nm ruby wavelength is particularly effective in treating stubborn blue and green inks. Most traditional lasers only support 1064 nm and 532 nm wavelengths and cannot treat patients with bright multicolored tattoos because those wavelengths are reflected by vibrant green and blue pigments.
