What Is Melasma Laser Treatment?

Melasma laser treatment uses targeted laser energy to the brown or gray-brown pigmentation that most often on the face. At Rethink, we use the FDA-cleared PicoWay Resolve™ 1064nm handpiece from Candela.

What Causes Melasma?

Sun exposure and hormonal changes, including pregnancy and birth control, can trigger or worsen melasma. Because sunlight stimulates pigment production, melasma can return or darken with continued sun exposure.

Melasma Pigmentation in the Skin

How Laser Treatment Targets Melasma Pigmentation

The PicoWay Resolve™ 1064nm handpiece splits each picosecond pulse into thousands of microscopic treatment zones, a process called laser-induced optical breakdown (LIOB). Each zone disrupts excess pigment and triggers new collagen and elastin, while surrounding skin stays undisturbed. This gentler, fractional approach suits melasma, which can react poorly to aggressive treatment. The 1064nm wavelength is FDA-cleared for melasma in Fitzpatrick skin types I–IV.

What Results Can I Expect?

Melasma is a chronic pigmentation condition, so treatment focuses on meaningful improvement and long-term management, not a permanent cure. Most clients see gradual fading and a more even tone as sessions progress. Your specialist sets realistic expectations at your consultation.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT DURING MELASMA TREATMENT?

1
PERSONALIZED EVALUATION

Your specialist reviews your pigment pattern, skin type, triggers, and history to build your plan.

2
TREATMENT PROGRESSION

Sessions are spaced deliberately, since melasma responds best to a measured approach.

3
AFTERCARE & SUN PROTECTION

Daily sun protection is non-negotiable for reducing the chance of pigment returning.
