What Is Dark Spot Laser Treatment?

Dark spot laser treatment is an in-office procedure that targets excess pigment to brighten discoloration and even out skin tone. Rethink uses the PicoWay Resolve™ handpiece from Candela, in the 532nm or 1064nm wavelength, calibrated to your skin tone and pigment type.

What Causes Dark Spots?

Dark spots form when skin produces excess melanin in one area, called hyperpigmentation. Sunspots come from years of UV exposure, post-inflammatory marks follow breakouts or irritation, and lentigines often develop with age and genetics. Daily sun protection helps prevent sun-driven spots.

How Laser Treatment Targets Dark Spots

The PicoWay Resolve™ handpiece splits each picosecond pulse into thousands of microscopic treatment zones, a process called laser-induced optical breakdown (LIOB). Within each zone, excess pigment is disrupted and gradually cleared by the body, while new collagen and elastin support a more even tone. That means quick, comfortable sessions instead of one aggressive pass. Your specialist selects the 532nm or 1064nm wavelength based on your skin tone and pigment type.

Frequently ASKED QUESTIONS

They work best on spots caused by sun exposure or past irritation, as long as the pigment sits close to the surface. Your specialist will evaluate the area to confirm whether laser treatment is the right approach.

Treatment focuses only on areas where visible pigment is present. A quick assessment before the session helps guide precise targeting.

Most clients only need to arrive with clean skin and avoid applying heavy products beforehand. Your specialist will share any additional recommendations during your consultation.

Many describe a mild warmth similar to a brief flush. Cooling is offered immediately afterward to help your skin settle comfortably.

In some cases, your specialist may suggest pairing it with complementary treatments to support your overall skin goals. Any combination is recommended only when it fits your skin’s needs and safety.
